Villa Balbiano or Villa del Balbianello: which one for a wedding on Lake Como

Two villas by the same cardinal, three kilometres apart and confused for centuries: one is hired whole for days, the other by the hour from the FAI.

The confusion has a date: 1787. That year Cardinal Angelo Maria Durini bought Villa Balbiano, at Ossuccio, and on the tip of the Lenno promontory, three kilometres further north, had a pavilion built that he called the "Balbianino", over a former Franciscan monastery: today it is Villa del Balbianello. Ever since, the two villas have been stealing each other's name in searches, headlines and enquiries to wedding planners, and not a week goes by without someone asking for one while thinking of the other.

Same cardinal, same lake, almost the same name: but one is a house rented with its bedrooms, the other a museum rented for six hours.

For a wedding the difference is total. Villa Balbiano is a private residence, managed by The Heritage Collection, hired as a whole, with its fifteen bedrooms, for one or more days: the villa of "House of Gucci". Villa del Balbianello has belonged to the FAI, Italy's National Trust, since 1988, by bequest of the explorer Guido Monzino, is open to the public every day and is hired in blocks of hours, with no bedrooms: the villa of "Star Wars: Episode II" and "Casino Royale". This page compares the two line by line, with sources.

The formula: days versus hours

Villa Balbiano is taken exclusively for one, two or three days, and capacity follows the days: according to the planners who offer it, up to 200 guests with a three-day hire, around fifty with the two-day formula; guests sleep at the villa, up to about thirty across the six palace suites, the wing and the Villino. Villa del Balbianello is hired in six-hour blocks, usually from afternoon to midnight, with no possibility of sleeping on site: the FAI has no bedrooms and no minimum stay, because nobody stays.

Guests: 200 versus 130

At Balbianello the maximum is 130 guests for the reception, and the ceremony on the terrace takes 80 to 100 people of whom only 60 seated; above 50 guests a marquee is mandatory as the rain plan. At Balbiano the limit is set by the formula: 200 with three days, the frescoed rooms seat around sixty indoors, the lakeside garden up to 200 for the ceremony according to planners. For a large wedding the choice is made by the numbers before taste comes into it.

The ceremony: where a civil rite is valid

This is where the two villas swap places. At Villa del Balbianello the FAI explicitly allows civil and symbolic ceremonies on site, with municipal fees charged separately; a Catholic ceremony is not among the FAI's options, and couples who want one arrange the church elsewhere. At Villa Balbiano symbolic ceremonies and religious blessings are held, but a legally binding civil rite must take place at a venue authorised by the municipality of Tremezzina, before going up to the villa for the party.

Arrival: two jetties, two logics

Both are reached from the lake, and that is why they are chosen. At Balbiano the private jetty and the two boathouses bring guests to the gate, and those arriving by car park inside the estate. At Balbianello you arrive by private boat at the FAI jetty, or on foot from Lenno with a kilometre uphill, about 25 minutes: for a wedding of 130 people that means organising boats for everyone, there and back before midnight.

The rules: suppliers, music, hours

At Villa del Balbianello the caterer is chosen from a list approved by the FAI, music ends at midnight, extendable to 2 am for a fee, and every hour past midnight costs 3,000 euros plus VAT according to the guides that report the tariff. At Villa Balbiano the rules are those of a private house hired exclusively: hours and suppliers are agreed with the owners, and the municipality's rules on outdoor music set the limit.

Costs: a public tariff versus a quote

Villa del Balbianello has a public tariff, a rare thing: according to the guides reporting it for 2027, a six-hour hire before VAT runs from 15,700 euros for up to 30 guests to 18,500 for 50, 23,000 for 70, 28,900 for 100 and 70,500 for 130; the FAI's 2025 tariff, in PDF, is the reference document. Villa Balbiano publishes no rates: planners' guides quote a base fee of around 50,000 euros for the event day in 2026, and rental agencies speak of 100,000 to 200,000 euros for two- or three-day formulas with overnight stays. In both cases the real quote comes only from the owners.

Which one, in a line

Villa Balbiano for a multi-day wedding with guests sleeping on site, the privacy of a house and true exclusivity. Villa del Balbianello for a ceremony and a one-evening reception in one of the most photographed places in the world, with a civil rite on site and the knowledge that at midnight, or at two if you pay, everyone gets back on the boats. On this site Villa Balbiano has a venue page and a stay page; Villa del Balbianello appears here and among Balbiano's surroundings, because nobody sleeps there, and a site about places to stay can do no other.

At which of the two can a civil ceremony be held?

How much does it cost to hire Villa del Balbianello?

According to the guides reporting the FAI's 2027 tariff, from 15,700 euros plus VAT for six hours with up to 30 guests to 70,500 euros plus VAT for 130, the maximum. The FAI's 2025 tariff in PDF is the official reference.
