La Badiola was born in 1826 at the wish of Leopold II of Lorraine, Grand Duke of Tuscany, who had a hunting residence built here, drawn by the Acquagiusta, a spring of pure water in a Maremma still made of marshes. In 2000 the Moretti family, of Franciacorta and L'Albereta, bought the estate and rebuilt the buildings of the old hamlet; in spring 2004 the grand-ducal villa reopened as a resort, L'Andana, with Alain Ducasse's name on the kitchen, while the farmhouses became Casa Badiola and wine and oil production continued.

The Grand Duke chose it in 1826 for a spring of good water in the middle of the marsh: the quiet of those days is still the reason to come.

Today the fine-dining kitchen carries the name of Enrico Bartolini, Italy's most Michelin-starred chef: La Trattoria Enrico Bartolini, in Leopold II's old granary, has held a Michelin star since 2016, confirmed in the 2026 guide, with resident chef Aniello Siano since 2025 and a contemporary Tuscan cuisine with many dishes cooked over charcoal. On 1 October 2026 Il Sole 24 Ore reported negotiations for the resort to pass from the Moretti family to the De Santis family of Passalacqua and Grand Hotel Tremezzo, on Lake Como: at the time of writing this is not confirmed.

The estate, 500 hectares of vineyards, olive groves and Mediterranean scrub, is seven kilometres from Castiglione della Pescaia and the coast, and twenty from Grosseto.

Getting there

L'Andana is in the locality of Badiola, in the municipality of Castiglione della Pescaia, province of Grosseto: an avenue of cypresses, maritime pines and vines leads from the road to the villa. The sea and the town are seven kilometres away, Grosseto with its railway station twenty. The most convenient airports are Pisa and Rome Fiumicino, both two hours or a little more by car: the Maremma is reached by car, and a car is also needed to move between beaches, villages and wineries.

The Villa, the Fattoria, the Granaio, the Scuderia

The resort is made of two main buildings, La Villa, the grand-ducal residence, and La Fattoria, joined by a winter garden of iron and glass that houses the reception. There are 61 rooms and suites, with stone fireplaces and views over the countryside, plus a few apartments; the Granaio holds suites, and La Scuderia, built where Leopold II's stables stood, is a private villa with a pool for anyone who wants the estate without the hotel. The rooms in the Villa are the ones with the history on their walls, the others the ones with more silence.

La Trattoria Enrico Bartolini and La Villa

There are two restaurants. La Trattoria Enrico Bartolini, one Michelin star, is in the old granary: two tasting menus, one of seafood with the grill as protagonist and a shorter one that brings together Aniello Siano's Campanian roots and Bartolini's cooking, with dishes also à la carte. Ristorante La Villa is the everyday table, with breakfast, lunches and picnics on the estate. The house wine and oil are the estate's own, with the cellar open to visits.

The ESPA spa, the pools, the golf

The spa is by ESPA, with a hammam, a hot bath in black slate, an indoor pool, sauna and steam room, plus a day spa for non-residents. Outdoors there are the pool and the whirlpool over the gardens, a tennis court, a small golf course and mountain bikes for the estate. The beaches of Castiglione della Pescaia and the dunes of Marina di Grosseto are ten minutes away; the Maremma Park, with its paths down to the sea, half an hour.

When to go

May, June and September are the Maremma's months: dry heat, a sea already or still warm, the harvest at the end of summer. July and August are full on the coast, but the estate remains a refuge; April and October are perfect for anyone coming for the food, the spa and the wineries, with the beaches empty. The resort has a long season, but it is worth checking winter opening dates before booking.

Who it is for, and who it is not for

It is the right choice for a couple or a family who want a Tuscany different from the Chianti hills, wilder and with the sea, and a resort where the food is a reason for the journey. It is not the right choice for anyone who wants the sea below the room (it is seven kilometres away) or a hotel in the centre of a town: here you stay on an estate, and in the evening you stay on the estate.

Rates and conditions

Rates for rooms, La Scuderia and the apartments are on the official website and change with the season; we do not quote them here because they would change before this page did. La Trattoria is booked separately, for non-residents too, and on summer weekends it is wise to book it together with the room.
