Villa Balbiano's taste for parties is not a marketing invention. Cardinal Angelo Maria Durini, who bought it in 1787, used it to entertain the poet Giuseppe Parini and Milanese society of his day, and the rooms frescoed in the seventeenth century by the Recchi brothers and Agostino Silva are the same ones where tables are laid today when it rains. Since 2011 a restoration led by French decorator Jacques Garcia has returned the villa to its life as a private residence, rented in its entirety: a reception here means having the estate, not a function room.

A wedding here doesn't hire a room: it hires the villa, the garden, the jetty and the staff, for as many days as it takes.

In 2021 the villa served as the set for the family-home scenes of "House of Gucci", and it has appeared in fashion editorials, including one for Harper's Bazaar: two things most guests already know before they arrive.

Where the ceremony takes place

There are three ceremony settings: the terrace at the back of the villa, overlooking the lake; the waterfront garden, with a 180-degree view, which according to the planners who work there seats up to 200 guests; and the estate's private chapel. The villa hosts symbolic ceremonies and religious blessings; a legally binding civil ceremony must take place at a venue authorised by the municipality (Ossuccio has been part of Tremezzina since 2014), with the villa then hosting the reception. For couples coming from abroad, the paperwork for a civil wedding in Italy is one of the things a local planner handles before anyone books a flight.

The reception: garden, forecourt and frescoed rooms

From the gate a long green avenue, with a water channel running between the cypresses, leads to the gardens and to the forecourt in front of the villa, where the banquet is laid in summer; the party then carries on in the gardens or on the forecourt itself. In cold or wet weather the tables move into the palace's frescoed rooms, which seat around sixty: that is the figure to keep in mind when drawing up the rain plan for a large wedding. For an intimate dinner, or an elopement, there is the indoor dining room for twelve.

How many guests

The number depends less on the space, which is there, than on the hire formula: the agencies that offer the villa speak of events for 50 to 200 people, with full capacity available only on a three-day hire and around fifty guests on the two-day formula. No other detail changes the quote as much, and it should be settled before choosing a date.

Staying at the villa

The six suites in the main palace, decorated by Jacques Garcia, sleep up to twelve: usually the couple and close family. The four bedrooms in the wing and the five in the Villino bring the total to around thirty overnight guests. Everyone else stays in the hotels along the shore, between Tremezzo, Cadenabbia and Lenno, or in Bellagio across the water, reached by boat: evening transfers are among the first things a planner organises here.

How guests get there

Como is about 25 kilometres away along the Regina, the lakeside road, and about twenty minutes by motorboat; Milan and Malpensa airport are just over an hour by car. The Regina is narrow and busy in high season: for large groups, planners bring guests in by boat to the private jetty, which with its two boathouses is also the villa's most photographed entrance, or by shuttle from car parks in the nearby villages.

When to marry here

The usable season runs from April to October, with June, July and September among the most requested months. Weather on the lake changes quickly even in summer: the rain plan, meaning the sixty-cover indoor room or a covered structure in the garden, is not a contingency but a line in the budget. The best light falls in the late afternoon, when the sun drops behind the mountains on the western shore and the façade stays lit.

How much it costs

The villa publishes no price list: rates are given on request, and the figures in circulation come from planners and agencies, not from the owners. According to Tulle Together (February 2026), the base fee for the event day is around 50,000 euros; Home in Italy reports formulas from 100,000 euros for two days and one night on weekdays and from 200,000 euros for three days and two nights at weekends, with accommodation included. Catering, décor, music and the planner come on top, plus 22% VAT where not included.

For comparison, planners' 2026 guides put an 80-to-100-guest Lake Como wedding at 75,000 to 140,000 euros all in: Villa Balbiano sits above that range, because you hire the whole estate with its bedrooms. Figures for the rest of Italy are in our guide to luxury wedding costs.

What to ask before signing

  • how many days of hire the proposal covers, and how many guests that formula allows;
  • which buildings are included for overnight stays (the palace only, or the wing and Villino as well);
  • what the rain plan is, and whether a garden cover is included or hired separately;
  • what hours and limits the municipality sets for outdoor music, and how the villa manages them;
  • whether the resident staff work during the event or the caterer brings its own team;
  • how much the security deposit is and what it covers.

What to see nearby

For a wedding or a multi-day event, the surroundings become part of the programme: welcome activities, excursions for guests, the day after the ceremony.
